The Best Month for Whale Watching in Boston

The Boston season runs mid-April through October, and the months are not interchangeable.

July to September — the core

The most animals on the bank and the warmest weather. Humpbacks are settled into the feeding grounds and sightings are at their most dependable. It is also the busiest stretch, so book the sailing rather than turning up.

September — quietly the best

Water still warm enough to be comfortable, crowds thinning after Labor Day, and sightings still strong. If you have a free choice of date, this is where I would put it.

April to May — the shoulder, with something rare

Fewer humpbacks settled in, cooler and rougher. But this is when critically endangered North Atlantic right whales pass through. Boats are legally required to keep a substantial distance, so any encounter is distant and brief — treat it as a privilege, not a plan.

October — the closing weeks

Animals still present, weather increasingly unreliable, more cancellations. Fine if you are flexible about which day you sail.

What does not vary

The distance. Every trip is a four-hour commitment regardless of month, because the bank does not move closer in August.
