The time commitment

Three and a half to four hours from boarding to stepping off, and it does not compress — the crossing to Stellwagen Bank and back is set by distance. Budget the half-day rather than trying to fit it between other plans, and expect a late return to be a good sign: it usually means the boat stayed with animals.

Dress for water, not for the city

This catches almost everyone. Open water 25 miles offshore runs far colder than Boston, and the apparent wind on a moving boat makes it colder still. A warm layer and a windproof shell are worth carrying even in August, when the city is in the eighties and the deck is not.

The rest of the list

Sun protection. Little shade, and glare off the water burns people who thought it was overcast.

Seasickness tablets, taken before boarding. The single highest-value item in this list.

Binoculars if you have them. A phone camera will disappoint you at distance — the animals are further away than they feel, and the good photographs on operator websites come from long lenses.

Cash or card for the galley, and a bottle of water.

What not to bother with

A tripod, a drone (not permitted), and any expectation of a signal offshore.
